BOOK REVIEW
TITLE: Mass Media In Nigeria: Perspectives on Growth and Development.
AUTHOR: Rodney Ciboh
REVIEWER: Ada Vincent Adason
No. of Pages: 363
This book, Mass media in Nigeria: Perspective on Growth and Development is authored by Rodney Ciboh, a lecturer in the department of Mass Communication Benue State University, Makurdi, Nigeria. The book seeks to provide a thorough historical, socio-political and current treatment of important topical issues, personalities, technology and the various attempts by the colonial and post-independence governments in the control of the media. The systemic approach of the book on the growth and development of the mass media is both a texture book as well as a reference book for students and scholars in the field of Mass Communication, Political Science, Sociology, History, Law and Ethics.
The ten chapters book clearly shows that the media of Mass Communication do not operate in isolation but within a whole system that exists. That is, while the Mass Media’s primary role is to inform the public, they are as well influenced by the society that they operate within. We not only learn about the world from Mass Media, we also learn how to live within our society from the same source.
The text covers extensively the checks and balances of the system from the colonial administration through the post-independence period to the self imposed professional association and agencies that keep the media practitioners in check.
Conclusively, the author’s hope is not to trace the historical development of the Mass Media in Nigeria, but also to stimulate thought and discussion on topic of undeniable importance to our field. Most people interact with Mass Media as passive consumers. In this work, Ciboh provides analyses as well as reasons for the phenomena that took place throughout the development of the Mass Media in Nigeria.
Since the author has put in a lot of efforts while piecing the book together, readers are encouraged to pick up as many copies as they can afford. The information there in will go further to enrich their knowledge of Mass Media in Nigeria. So, enjoy the book.

New Project Announced: Webdesigndev.com
by Michael Posted in Website Reviews
I have recently launched a new project called Webdesigndev.com which offers Web designers and Developers advice and tutorials on how to create unique websites.
About Webdesigndev:
Two years ago when I had Webdesigndev online it was bringing in $2000 for me every month till I closed the website down because the website got banned from Google Adsense because of the quality of traffic. I then decided to launch my next big project which is Retire at 21, in the last few months I decided to put some ideas together to bring Webdesigndev back online, for 3 reasons:
- Domain is over 7 years old! Google loves me. I receive 5000 visitors a month from Google already in one month!
- Page rank of 4, although a lot of us don’t belive in page rank anymore, a lot of people do and it helps to sell advertising spaces!
- I have other related websites to promote the website to.
The website is packed with some of the most detailed tutorials on the internet such as How to create a flash website and Designing a Website In Photoshop. Producing this kind of content is very expensive but I have hired 2 designers so far to produce articles, these designers are Eli of Photoshopstar and Tom of Pushstandards.
3 Month Goals - My Goal’s for August 1st
Traffic: 500,000 Visitors
Getting traffic for the tutorials is one of the easiest ways to produce 1000’s of visitors almost instantly. There are 100s of tutorial indexing websites which will each bring you 100s and 1000s of visitors in the first few days.
Revenue: $2,500 Revenue
More traffic you have the more you can charge for advertising. I will be selling my advertising spaces through advertising brokers such as BuySellAds and Text-Link-Ads to minimize the work I have to do. I will also accept private advertisers and aim to offer a premium membership in the near future.
Subscribers: 10,000 Newsletter Readers/RSS Subscribers
I hope to really do well with gaining subscribers, I already have 214. I hope to gain subscribers mainly through building a newsletter list and auto subscribing them to my RSS feed. You can see how I attracted 214 people in the last 2 weeks by visiting a blog post and at the top you will see a box offering my free gift with my newsletter.
Web Design Dev Forums:
I hope to launch the forums some time this month officially, I will be offering every forum member free hosting for reaching 50 posts, so get ahead of the game and start posting now.
Register on the forums…
Suggestions and Requests
What do you think of the website? Any changes you would like me to make. We would also like to know what other tutorials you would like to see, we are going to be posting 3 articles next week:
Creating a blog from scratch and taking you through every step to making money online.
Building Websites To Earn Money
Creating a animated advertising banner in Photoshop
To keep up with the progress of the website subscribe to the RSS feed and follow me on twitter!

BREAKING NEWS!
A News Release From Michael Dunlop: 13th November 2007:
In the world of retirement, 21 is the new 60.
Short of finding a diamond mine in your backyard, or marrying Paris Hilton, the closest most of us are going to come to retiring young is via the national lottery. But even then the odds are stacked heavily against us.
It seems that in today’s corporate world, working a 9 to 5, having two kids, one car and retirement at 60 (if you are lucky) is generally the road map that we all take…
We are told to eat our greens, look before we cross the road, don’t trust strangers, put some money away for retirement… and with any luck we can scrape through life’s battles and illnesses and finally settle down at 60 after decades of hard work, to look forward to our golden years.
Well that is the idea, but it seems that those golden years are in reality, more like rusty years.
One young entrepreneur certainly didn’t want to wait for the rust to set in before he started enjoying all life has to offer. In fact, he is turning common beliefs on their head with his website retireat21.com
This portal provides free, step-by-step advice to show you exactly how you can make money on the Internet.
“But I am already older than 21”, I hear you cry. Don’t worry, despite the name, the information and advice is more geared towards retiring prior to having a fake hip installed. Even if you retire just a few years earlier due to the advice at retireat21.com it surely has to be worth taking 5 minutes from your day to check it out… doesn’t it?
This stunning new site will show you:
- How to develop your BIG idea… (bigger is better)- How to complete a fully functional website- We put you in touch with other entrepreneurs, you can pick their brains for FREE- Recommendations from the owner and star of retireat21.com- Interviews with young entrepreneurs who are making it BIG on the Internet- All the latest and cutting-edge techniques on the net. There is a lot of rubbish out there, we help you separate the gold from the rust
Thousands of people are using Retireat21.com to change their financial lives, you can do the same for only $4,999 per month….
Only joking!Retireat21.com is and will remain one of the few genuine FREE resources for young entrepreneurs on the net.
Visit today, tell your kids to join, do whatever it takes to avoid the rat race and the rusty years.

A News Release From Midascode Ltd: 9th December 2006:
New Website Promises Young Entrepreneurs A Helping Hand - RetireAt21.com
When history is written it seems almost certain that from a business point of view, the first decade of the 21st Century will be remembered best as the Era of The Young Entrepreneur
Think Chad Hurley and Steven Chen of YouTube
Think Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google
Think Multimillionaires and even Billionaires at very young ages
And it seems these Young Entrepreneurs are getting even younger. So claims a new website launched this week by 17 year old British Entrepreneur, Michael Dunlop, founder of RetireAt21.com.
The website grew out of Mr Dunlop's own experience as a young entrepreneur and in particular his experience of the ups and downs of launching a number of high traffic websites - all without the usual help of facilities like credit cards or business bank accounts. As Mr Dunlop points out, when you are determined enough, anything is possible.
"Do not let anyone tell you cannot do it, don't let anyone rain on your parade, there is always a way. Sometimes it may have to be a little unconventional and it may mean selling some of your relatives on the idea, but it can be done. Above all, if you believe in yourself and believe it is possible then you are more than halfway there"
Among the websites many features at RetireAt21.com is help with learning webdesign, building an online business, marketing, monetizing your website and a growing Mentor Database.
The website is already creating quite a stir and has attracted some considerable support in the form of over $3500 worth of prizes for a Webmasters Young Gun Competition. Competition will no doubt be quite fierce.
And a final word from Michael "While the website may be called Retire At 21, it is of course open to all ages with a particular desire at present to attract Mentors to the site, who can advise these fledgling businesses. Also, while the goal may appear to be retirement, the real goal is to be financially free" One feels, that this young man in particular may be closer to that goal than most.
Of course, the slip side of this discussion is what will happen when these young entrepreneurs do eventually retire? What charitable foundations or other great achievements will these remarkable young people achieve in their lifetimes?
For sure, a visit to this website will allow you to feel the pulse of this growing Young Entrepreneur phenomenon.
